What is Archaeology?
Ages: 5 - Adult. Material is modified to the level of the
students.
Time: 30 - 60 min. Program can be adjusted to meet time
restrictions.
This is a basic introduction to the discipline of archaeology.
Students will learn the academic, professional, legal,
theoretical and practical aspects of what archaeologists do. This
class will lead students' understanding of archaeology away
from the stereotypical "Indiana Jones" concept of the
discipline into the reality of an exciting professional
career.
Southeastern Culture History
Ages: 5 - Adult. Material is modified to the level of the
students.
Time: 30 - 60 min. Program can be adjusted to meet time
restrictions.
This program is an excellent introduction to archaeology in the
Southeastern United States. Beginning with the Paleo-Indian
period (10,000 BC) students are shown how the archaeological
record can reveal the changes in human culture through time.
Discussion will include Native American food ways, mobility,
shelter, tool kits, and social organization. Students will be
given the opportunity to examine artifacts from a number of time
periods.
"Penny Archaeology"
Ages: 8 - Adult. Material is modified to the level of the
students.
Time: 30 - 60 min. Program can be adjusted to meet time
restrictions.
Each student is given an object with which they are familiar, a
penny. The penny is used to draw the students' attention to
the enormous amount of cultural information that can be retrieved
from a single object when it is viewed from a number of different
perspectives.
Concepts of the Past
Ages: Grades 4 - 8
Time: 30 - 60 min. Program can be adjusted to meet time
restrictions
Through a series of practical activities students are given an
introduction to the concepts of past time on a personal level.
Sequencing personal past events leads to discussion of the
importance of past history in their own lives and allows
speculation about the importance of the present to the future.
Students will expand social studies skills, use simple math,
inference and evaluation skills to complete these activities.
Native American Foodways
Ages: 5 - Adult. Material is modified to the level of the
students.
Time: 30 - 60 min. Program can be adjusted to meet time
restrictions.
The basic information presented in this class will include;
changes in subsistence patterns through time, world wide food
exchange, Native American agricultural techniques, and
archaeological evidence for how humans have used plants. The
expanded version of the program will include a slide presentation
of regional plants and their uses, and /or a tour of the Native
American garden at CCPP. For an additional $1.00 per person
students can sample an assortment of seasonal traditional Native
American foods and beverages.
Workshop for Classroom Teachers
Open to certified teachers and home-school instructors.
Time: 3 hours
This class is designed to give instructors an introduction into
basic concepts of archaeology and demonstrate many methods for
bringing archaeology into the classroom. We will discuss how
aspects of archaeology can be used in math, science, social
studies, reading, art, writing, and computer activities. An
archaeological problem will be posed and workshop participants
will have the opportunity to discover what each discipline can
contribute to a solution.

Unit Excavation
Ages: 5th Grade - Adult. The class is limited to 24 students.
Time: 4 - 6 hours.
Students will be given the opportunity to learn archaeological
field techniques and methodology in a controlled setting. This
program includes classroom instruction covering southeastern
culture history, safety procedures, and mapping. Students will
learn the significance of the context in which the artifacts are
found.
Excavation is carried out in specially designed educational
units. This class will conclude with the students analyzing the
artifacts that they have recovered and preparing a short summary
of the possible time period and culture the artifacts may
represent. Excavations are subject to cancellation and
rescheduling due to weather conditions.
