Born 1919, Catawba Indian Reservation, York County, South Carolina
For over thirty years, Sara Ayers and her husband Foxx have dug clay together, built pots in their kitchen and burnt wares in a backyard pit in West Columbia. Ayers has received many awards, including the South Carolina Folk Heritage Award, and her work is in the collections of numerous museums. Pottery is an essential element of Ayers' life. It is part of her faith, her family, and her identity.
"Pottery is my life. It has helped me through some of life's rocky times."
