Born 1917, Lancaster County, South Carolina
From the time she began to make pottery, Catherine Canty wanted to make effigies. Turtle and frogs were the forms that captured her attention and challenged her technique. Although the frog was the hardest form for her to master, it became her specialty. Canty treasures her memories of her grandmother, Rachel George Brown, but does not have any of her pottery. She views her own pottery as a gift to her grandchildren.
"I won't be around forever, and my grandchildren will be able to see some of the things I've made."
