Born 1922, Cherokee County, South Carolina
Earl Robbins is one of a growing number of men making Catawba pottery. He resumed making pottery in 1987, after years of helping his wife, Viola, dig clay and burn pots. Robbins specializes in large-scale works, particularly the snake and horse pots. His pipes and molds are sought after by both customers and other potters. Robbins is also known for his unusual work habits. For maximum solitude, he works in the early morning hours.
"I like to get up at two in the morning to work on my pots. I can get some peace that way. There's nobody there to tell me I'm doing it wrong."
